Crustal and Mantle Deformation Inherited From Obduction of the Semail Ophiolite (Oman) and Continental Collision (Zagros)

چکیده
A common deviation from typical subduction models occurs when thrust sheets of oceanic crust and upper-mantle rocks are emplaced over more buoyant continental lithosphere. The archetypal example ophiolite obduction is the Semail in United Arab Emirates (UAE)-Oman orogenic belt, formed obducted onto Arabian margin during Late Cretaceous. Strait Hormuz syntaxis, northern extent UAE-Oman mountains, marks transition ocean-continent convergence Gulf Oman to collision along Zagros Mountains. Based on new seismic data a focused recording network, we infer crustal mantle deformation northeastern corner plate (including southern mountains), using observations anisotropic tomography shear-wave splitting (SWS) measurements. We recover change ∼90° (from approximately WNW nearly NS) axis fast-anisotropic orientations mountain consistent with dominant strike belts. also find evidence our SWS parameters for localized fossil lithospheric underlying range, possibly related stress-induced tectonism triggered by north-east oriented underthrusting proto-Arabian beneath overriding ophiolite. Shear-wave-splitting anisotropy two transects across Musandam peninsula, averaging 15° anticlockwise north, provide first geophysical verification previous geological that suggests NE polarity Cretaceous zone system.

Petrogenesis of the crust-mantle transition zone and the origin of lower crustal wehrlite in the Oman ophiolite
[1] Abstract: We studied trace element geochemistry and petrology of the crust-mantle transition zone (MTZ) in the Samail massif of the Oman ophiolite to constrain the location where different primitive magmas mix beneath an oceanic spreading ridge. The MTZ is the deepest location where crystallization took place and thus is an ideal place to determine the compositional diversity of melts leavi...
متن کاملPaleocene–Eocene record of ophiolite obduction and initial India-Asia collision, south central Tibet
[1] Uppermost Cretaceous to Eocene marine sedimentary sequences occur both to the south and north of the Yarlung Zangbo suture in south central Tibet. They consist of Indian-margin strata of the northern Tethyan Himalaya and Asian-margin strata of the Gangdese forearc. Both assemblages are characterized by major changes in depositional environment and sedimentary provenance at 65 Ma and an appe...
متن کاملSignatures of subduction-related hydrous magmas from the geochemistry of the upper mantle rocks of the northern Semail ophiolite
Concentrations of the incompatible trace elements and REEs in the upper mantle rocks of the Northern Semail ophiolite are very low, as typical in the residua of partial melting and in the early products of a fractionating magma. However, their geochemical characteristics have shown indications of hydrous magmas that more likely related to a subduction environment. Melt extraction can play a cru...
متن کاملThe enigma of crustal zircons in upper-mantle rocks: Clues from the Tumut ophiolite, southeast Australia
We suggest a new explanation for the presence of crustally derived zircons in the upper-mantle rocks of ophiolitic complexes, as an alternative to subduction-related models. Integrated isotopic (U-Pb, Hf, and O isotopes) and trace-element data for zircons from the Tumut ophiolitic complex (southeast Australia) indicate that these grains are related to granitic magmatism and were introduced into...
